Here's What's Coming Up:

 

Our Labor 2026 efforts to elect our pro-working-family endorsed candidates are live! The Florida AFL-CIO has prepared literature for our statewide endorsed candidates that you can print and distribute to your fellow union members. You can view WCFLC's endorsement list here. See below for opportunities for canvassing and phone banking between now and Election Day:

Mondays

    • Every Monday from now until November, join your FL AFL-CIO family for a Labor 2026 All Hands on Deck call. Receive the latest updates from the campaign front lines, share in victories and stories, as well as hear from some of our Labor Endorsed Candidates about your direct impact on their campaign!

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays Phone Banks from 6:30-8pm on Zoom

  • Sign up for online shifts here: https://www.mobilize.us/flaflcio/event/1040923/
  • Join us calling union members and their families to learn about the issues they're facing in an increasingly costly state and educate them about the pro-working-family candidates that the Florida's unions have endorsed in November.
  • Each night, we will call into a targeted State House or State Senate district for our candidates as well as David Jolly for Governor, and No on Amendment 3 (Homestead Tax Exemptions). We will start each session with a brief training on the Scale to Win platform and go over the script. Staff will be available throughout the phone bank to assist.
  • We recommend joining the Zoom call from a laptop, desktop, or tablet. Joining via phone only is not advised.

Saturdays Canvassing from 10:30am-1pm

  • Join us knocking doors of union members and their families!
  • Each Saturday, we will start in a different targeted district around West Central Florida Labor Council
    • September 26: St. Petersburg Canvass for Lindsay Polega-Quigley for Florida House, Dist. 60, David Jolly for Governor, Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate, and No on Amendment 3
    • October 3: North Lakeland Canvass for Victor Sims for Polk School Board, Polk Public School Millage Referendum, and David Jolly for Governor
    • October 10: Tampa Canvass for Luis Salazar for Florida House, Dist. 64, Brian Nathan for State Senate Dist. 14
    • October 17: Pinellas Park Canvass for Lindsay Polega-Quigley for Florida House, Dist. 60.
    • October 25: Polk Canvass for Victor Sims for Polk School Board, Polk Public School Millage Referendum, and David Jolly for Governor
  • We will start out with a brief training on the script and use of MiniVAN. Then we will pair volunteers up, and send you off to knock!

9/27: Matewan Screening and Q&A with Actor Will Oldham

A one-day-only matinee of the film Matewan is coming to Tampa's Sun-Ray Cinema on Sunday, September 27 at 1:30pm.

"Filmed in the coal country of West Virginia, Matewan celebrates labor organizing in the context of a 1920s work stoppage. Union organizer, Joe Kenehan, a scab named "Few Clothes" Johnson and a sympathetic mayor and police chief heroically fight the power represented by a coal company and Matewan's vested interests so that justice and workers' rights need not take a back seat to squalid working conditions, exploitation and the bottom line."


 

The 2 hour, 12 minute, PG-13 film will be followed by a Q&A with Will Oldham, who played 16-year-old miner and preacher Danny. Tickets and seat selections can be purchased in advance for $18.13 after taxes and fees.


 


 


 

10/9: The Wash by Powerstories Theatre

Powerstories Theatre is producing a run of the stage play The Wash at The Studio@620 in St. Petersburg October 1-11.

"In 1881, Black laundresses in Atlanta led a strike weeks before the International Cotton Exposition came to town. Demanding $1/dozen pounds of laundry, the Atlanta Washerwomen’s Strike of 1881 was one of the largest, successful interracial labor strikes of the post-Civil War era.

The Wash by Kelundra Smith offers an intimate and often funny look at ordinary women who went from workers to fighters and won. With humor, heart, and history, her play celebrates ordinary women who discovered extraordinary strength, transforming from workers into fighters and ultimately changing the course of labor rights in the South."
