Hillsborough Privatization Not Over Yet

Here's what you need to know this week:

Custodial employees in Hillsborough County Public Schools are not out of the woods yet. While the district has stated that they would be pursuing a centralization model, the preferred option for these employees, they have not closed out the Request for Proposals (RFP) on privatization. In fact, the deadline for the RFP has now been extended to May 14th.

We can't take the pressure off of the school board to oppose this horrible proposal. This proposal is bad for our public schools and our children. It’s bad for our local economy, it’s bad for our loyal school employees, and it will end up costing more money than it saves. We continue to urge everyone to contact your school board member in opposition to this shortsighted proposal. More info on this situation along with contact information for school board members can be found by CLICKING HERE.

Here's what's coming up:

- This Saturday (5/11), the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) will be conducting their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive event. This event, which routinely collects millions of pounds of food goods for the needy, gives you an opportunity to donate items by only going as far as your mailbox. To participate, just set out your non-perishable food in the bag of your choice well before your letter carrier’s normal pick-up time. The earlier the better! Note that they will be delivering and collecting mail as usual, on top of collecting food donations, so that pickup time could be slightly later than usual.

Keep in Mind:

Legislative Session may be over, but attacks on working people continue on an international scale. A new NAFTA is on the table, and the national AFL-CIO is still opposing a vote on the new deal until it is fixed. While the labor movement has been asking for renegotiation for years, this new deal lacks protections for workers and does little or nothing to foster an inclusive and sustainable economy. Contact your congressperson today at (855) 856-7545 and tell them No Vote until NAFTA is Fixed!

That's all for this week! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more updates. If you would like to receive text message alerts from the Florida AFL-CIO (Msg & data rates may apply), text FLUNION to 235246!
